About the Peace Corps

What is the Peace Corps? ¡Or as we say here in Costa Rica, Cuerpo de Paz!

The Peace Corps is a United States government program that was started in 1961 by John F. Kennedy in response to a growing need to help underdeveloped countries with social and economic growth.

The Peace Corps’ Mission

To promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals:

  • To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women
  • To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served
  • To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans

The Peace Corps works at the grassroots level and aims to create sustainable change in communities around the world. Today, there are volunteers serving in 63 countries in a variety of programs including agriculture, community economic development, education, youth development, and health. You can learn more about the Peace Corps’ volunteer programs here.

In 2014, changes were made to the Peace Corps application that simplified and accelerated the entire application process. The process, which used to take 1-2 years now (generally) takes less than a year. You can read about my application process which took 9 months from start to finish (still long enough to make a baby but shorter than it was before).
